Academic Journals on Gun Violence and the Social, Mental, and Political Effects

This annotated bibliography includes references related to the topics of gun violence, the role the government has in enforcing stricter gun laws and regulations, providing mental health services, and the communities affected by guns. Guns have posed as the number one threat in America and everyday individual’s lives are lost at the barrel of guns.

Kathleen, Grene, Dharani Amani, and Michael Siegel. 2024. “A Common Ground Gun Violence Prevention Policy Package.” Psychological Reports (April) 2024.

The Psychological Reports academic journal focused on the Ground Gun Violence Prevention Policy Package. The proposed acts within the package could reduce the number of shooting incidents and limit individuals who do not possess the proper background checks to purchase firearms. The journal conducted surveys and interviews with specific focus groups that consisted of gun owners and non-gun owners. These research methods provided the journal with personal views and opinions about guns and the gun prevention package. The data collected demonstrated the difference between a fox and hedgehog mindset. This journal is relevant to my research purpose because the personal views of gun owners are compared to non-gun owners. This is important when advocating the dangers of guns. You are able to identify who is for or against the second amendment and which is more important, guns or people?

Luther, Robert III. 2016. “Taking Aim at Recent Legislative Proposals to Curb Gun Violence from Mental Illness: A Second Amendment Response.” Harvard Journal on Legislation, vol. 53, no. 1, 2016, pp. 369-386.

Robert Luther’s academic journal focuses on mental health like Swanson and Roseburg but emphasizes the legal aspects. He takes statements from healthcare professionals who believe that those suffering from mental health challenges should go through a process administered by a health professional to determine if they are cognitively prepared to purchase and possess a firearm. This academic journal uses applied research methods to analyze the data to provide credible information that could aid governmental officials in their decision-making process. This journal is relevant to my research purpose because it is important that policy makers realize that providing federal assistance to mental health programs can help decline the mental health crisis. The journal also emphasizes the help policy makers can provide by creating laws and regulations to limit access of mentally challenged individuals from buying firearms.

Zoller, Heather and Diana Casteel. 2022. “#March for Our Lives: Health Activism, Diagnostic Framing, Gun Control, and the Gun Industry.” Health Communication, vol. 37, pp. 813-823. DOI. 10.1080/10410236.2020.1871167.

Zoller and Casteel’s academic journal focuses on the “#March for Our Lives” movement. This movement was created after the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas highschool shooting by the students who survived. The movement aimed to bring awareness and gain support from the community, other victims and survivors. The movement went on to file a lawsuit against the National Rifle Association on the basis that guns pose a threat to society and needed to be regulated. The movement challenged not only the association but the second amendment. This academic journal uses non normative theory and qualitative research methods by analyzing social media discussion forums and sites. The movement was able to utilize social media platforms to promote the message about gun violence. This journal is relevant to my research purpose because it demonstrates the power of social media. Everyday people use different social media platforms to share updates and information. By using these different platforms, students were able to spread their message about gun violence.
