Analysis : A Critical Analysis of the State of News Media
The Pew Research Center released the state of the news media project that consists of eight fact sheets. These fact sheets tactile different forums of media. All have a common factor that contributes to either an increase or decrease in viewership, revenue, and coverage. One common factor is the decrease in first time reporting news. Newspaper (print and digital), television viewers and radio broadcasts have seen a decline in viewership. People are not tuning in as much to evening broadcasts or listening to traditional radio stations. But other forms of news media such as late night talk shows and third party news sources are gaining more viewerships because of how engaging they have become. Once bigtime news media are slowly declining possibly because of new media arising and public confidence. These new means of media have seen an increase in their viewers and revenue. Facebook saw a rise in revenue due to digital advertising. This also plays a role in traditional news broadcasting declining. Digital advertising provides links to these other means of modern news outlets. Boosting their viewership and putting money in their pockets and the platforms they post on.
This leads to the second common factor to contribute to the decline, the automatic use of social media. People and companies no longer utilize newspapers, traditional radio, and local news stations to share information. They turn to social media to reach the larger audience. The new and upcoming news outlets share their reports from sources that could be creditable or non-creditable. The use of social media to share news can have loopholes for fake news and misinformation to spread. This is what causes the distrust and decline in traditional news reporting. It is sad to know that traditional news outlets are declining, but with times changing and technology becoming more advanced, news media are bound to be changed sooner or later.
