Freedom on the Internet - Theory and Application

I am 50/50 with the precedent established in the Reno Case. So let’s break down the statement. The first sentence goes, “The Internet is a unique and wholly new medium of worldwide human communication.” Before the internet, people were communicating by house phone, the large box phone with an antenna, handwritten letters, and mail pigeons, just to name a few. The internet provided a new wave of chat rooms and websites, people could connect with family and friends for and wide no matter the time of day. The second sentence goes, “now enables tens of millions of people to communicate with one another and to access vast amounts of information from around the world.” Apart from communicating with friends and family, people were able to access news and information from around the world. People who migrated to different countries, for example, people from the Bahamas, who moved to America, were able to get updates from news back home. They were able to keep up with current events back home. Information such as news and history was able to be shared around the world. People were able to learn new facts that they never knew before. The third sentence goes, “t)he interest in encouraging freedom of expression in a democratic society outweighs any theoretical but unproven benefit of censorship.” One of the funding elements and principles of democracy is freedom of expression. Individuals are able to express themselves, such as ideals and values without restrictions and limitations. People sharing their ideals and values creates discussions on important issues that can better one’s country/nation. And the last sentence goes, “Therefore, any efforts to regulate or monitor digital content should undergo the highest levels of legal scrutiny, higher than regulations on broadcast or print media.” There should be certain regulations when it comes to dangerous things shared such as plans about attacks. Those should be taken seriously and followed in case of any movement. Safety online and in real life is important.

As it pertains to privacy and technology, between the three websites, there was a discovery of topics surrounding children and the internet. They emphasize children's safety as it pertains to participating online. Preserving the young mind is the overall focus. Children should be exposed to safety and love when interacting with technology. Children’s privacy should be monitored by the parents to ensure their utmost safety. Another common topic is politics and media. How both play influential notes in society. Opinions expressed how social media utilizes data pertaining to political affiliations.
