Mass Media and the American Democracy
Does the mass media effectively serve the needs of the American democratic system, or not? In terms of making sure the American people are up-to-date on current events, yes. The media is able to broadcast important news updates, debates, world wide events, etc. But does all of this assist the needs of American democracy? It is honestly fair game to the reader. 50% of individuals will argue that the media has destroyed the concept of democracy with biased actions. The other 50% would argue that the media has broadened the horizon of democracy with equal and fair actions. Bruce Bimber made a prediction in 2003, stating that the technical advancements were considered political because they can affect the social and economical structures and values (Dunaway and Graber 2023).
I believe the media serves the American democratic system by providing a space for all to speak. The first amendment consists of the concept of freedom of speech and press. All opinions and views are welcome in terms of bettering American democracy. The American people are able to see the American democratic system play out in real time. It has given the American democratic system a platform to be showcased to its citizens and beyond. Mass media has given Americans the feeling that they are not left out of the democratic process. But the downside to this partnership, if you will, there is division amongst citizens about politics. Many times, citizens are unable to come together in agreement because of differences in opinion and values. This was the effect Bruce Bimber mentioned in 2003.
Now, would I answer this question the same as before? Probably, because the American democratic system and mass media are ever evolving and changing. At one time in American history, it was by ear that you heard what's happening in capitol hill. And most times you would read it in a sunday newspaper. Technology is becoming more popular and advancing even to the most rural areas. American democracy still stands on the foundation made by its founding fathers with a little sprinkle of technology to help strengthen the landing along with its pros and cons.
