Music and Politics

They Want I, But No” and “Con La Brisa” These two songs are from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Movie. I’ve highlighted these two songs because :

  1. The composition sounds absolutely beautiful on both songs

  2. The beats in “They Want I, But No” invoke this feeling of being strong within a foreign land. You have to lean on your strength because the world will throw curve balls.

  3. The melody in “Con La Brisa” invokes this feeling of calm and tranquility. You feel like you're in a space in which you're floating on air. (Or you know in the sea like the movie)

  4. These songs help display the different cultures represented within the movie : African and Hispanic (Indigenous) Heritages.

  5.  When listening to “They Want I, But No” certain lyrics can be related to issues like police brutality : “Why the laws wanna take us under?”

  • The artist, Tobe Nwigwe takes on the question on why the law is unfair to blacks.

  1. When listening to  “Con La Brisa” certain lyrics “And we blend in with the breeze and we sail with the wind” can be related to indigenous folklore and oral stories told generation after generation.

  2. These songs helped the movie show the relations between two different races, two different worlds coming together amidst conflict and politics. Understanding the message of the movie shows how the artists and the musicians compiled these songs to invoke emotions of being strong, calm, and becoming one.

Another great song I would also like to mention is “No Woman No Cry” (Also from the movie). This song is a cover for Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry”. He was a Jamaican Artist, who believed in world peace and that all men should live together in harmony. No war, no conflict. He believed that individuals should talk with their mouths and not their hands. Nothing gets solved that way. This version for the movie was done by Tems.

This song is from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Movie. I’ve highlighted this songs because :

  1. The melody in  “No Woman No Cry” invokes this feeling of sadness turned into healing. Our past does not define us but we should look to the future no matter what challenges arise.

  2. When listening to “No Woman No Cry” certain lyrics look back on the past. The listener is taken back to their own past to see how far they came.

  • “Everything's gonna be alright” The famous Jamaican saying!

  • “Said I remember when we used to sit In the government yard in Trenchtown.” Bob grew up living in homes that were created for the lower class individuals and their families.

  • “Oba, observing the hypocrites, mingle with the good people we meet” People act a certain way when around certain individuals or groups. They change their attitudes and/or behaviors when influenced.

  • “In this great future, you can't forget your past. So dry your tears I say.” Sure much of history is sad and full of depression and moments that make you question why, but it's what we do with what we learn that makes the difference for the future.

  1. This is a great post! Music can be such a powerful tool when it comes to the spread of ideas since it has the power to evoke feelings and emotions from people. I heard music being used a lot in the recent presidential campaign. The music that each candidate used in their ads often evoked feelings such as inspiration, triumph, or strength. In addition, candidates would use music at the beginning of their rallies and events to energize the crowd.

  2. Music and Politics don't seem like a duo that would incorporate one another but this blog highlights the key points to how they do intertwine. I would love to see even songs that are fully made to be political, as these lyrics show more of an emotional connection. What I mean is maybe an artist who is publicly saying as well this is for "XYZ" political stance. This was a joy to read and thank you for making this post!
