The Consequences of Media-Dominated Election Campaigns
The media is the only way campaigns are able to translate and connect with people. They utilize the media for personal gain and advancement. The media is able to make many individuals careers. Hence the phrase, “King Makers”. The media is able to polish and clean up candidates in order to present them to the audience / viewership. Now this does not pertain to looks but usually their political message and policies. For example, DeSantis is a great example of how the media was able to present him to the audience in a way where he was able to build his reputation and credibility. Though the media can also destroy one’s reputation especially with how the individuals handle certain situations such as the pandemic. The television age recruit is the advancement with technology. When Barack Obama was being elected he connected with the general public by utilizing media outlets to share campaign ads and speeches. Political candidates of the 21st century were able to cultivate the growth of television media to their liking. Pushing out ads that support their values and go against their opponents. These two factors lead to the dramatic evolution of campaign strategies. If candidates want to draw in new supporters, especially younger and first time voters, they utilize social media platforms such as tiktok, twitter, and even youtubes. Every time you watch a youtube video, there is more likely a campaign ad being shown. When you scroll on tiktok or twitter, after five posts, there’s a short campaign ad or post. The media shares the messages and stances from the candidates. People listen and make their decisions based on the information provided to them and what they seek out. It is left to the individual to interpret what they decide based on what they know.
