Balancing Free Press/Open Access to Advertising and the Ideal of an Inform

Image
Concepts such as these posed in the question above almost seem like black, white, and gray areas. On one side, some would say that trying to control what candidates ad contain and are aired is an infringement on the first amendment. The other side would say, yes, certain ads are misleading with no actual facts backing the claims made within them and should not be aired. And those in the middle, well, they would agree with both statements but might have a solution for both. To be completely honest, the broadcast companies could actually set up a system that fact checks the ads after they aired. They could make segments in their newscast, to discuss and dissect the ad for viewers and the audience to get a better understanding. On a side note, some digital companies and platforms have already installed fact checking systems for post sharing on their platforms. It is better for the general to be informed with correct information to make their decisions. Misleading the public with inf...

The Art of Political Ad-making (the case of AOC)

Image
The Courage to Change ad displays the characteristics and personality of AOC. The side we do not get to see as much because she is busy defending those who do not have a voice. You see a young girl essentially grow up to be a woman who believes in the betterment of not just herself but her community and the place she calls home. She became vulnerable in this ad to showcase her true self outside the fancy pantsuits. She had a 9 to 5 job that paid minimum wage. She saw and understood the struggles of not just herself but those around her. She saw how hard it was to make enough money for two weeks to buy food and clothes. She took a chance entering congress and has since then made waves. The ad demonstrated the use of visual images to showcase the Bronx. The working individuals who have to take on different tasks and jobs to make ends meet. The music and sound within the ad wanted to invoke emotions from views. To make them understand that she does not fight for herself but for thos...

Production Components in Political Advertising

Image
In order to gain support and attention, you need more than some words on a screen. You need visuals and sound. Any film student knows that in order to make a movie big and popular, the graphics and displays have to grasp the eyes of their audience. Level one is visual imaging. The human mind is drawn by what they can see. They see before they hear. Campaign teams understand that a candidate's image is important. They have to be dressed a certain way in order for others to take them seriously. Their look is what is going to sell the campaign. But not only that, their image with others in different areas of life. They need promotional images to put in campaign posts and ads. Showing casing essentially what type of person they are. One’s image is their brand. To sell to the public they have to look the part. Level two is visual text. Now it can not be plain white letters in roman twelve font. You will not gain any attraction to the campaign. You need big large letters in all caps wi...

Four Types of Advertising Strategies

Image
Advertising is how we are able to spend money on things we need and some things we don't need. It grabs our attention more than any newscast does. Advertising is its own entity within the entertainment business. It takes planning and extensive research to see what will draw people's attention. The first level is broadcasting. Broadcastings main goal is reaching a larger audience on a wider scale. It aims to go beyond the borders of domestic and international reach. For example, CNN. CNN was not always a 24/7 news outlet that could be seen from anywhere in the world. It started out as a small little baby outlet trying to find its landing. They eventually realized if they wanted to be bigger than ever they had to expand to greater lengths of journalism. Now, CNN reporters and journalists are able to broadcast wars and humanitarian crises from anywhere in the world. They are showcasing videos and images to the world through broadcasting. Without the broadcasting component, compa...

Descriptive Representation in the News

Image
Representation is everything. This earth is full of people from all walks of life. Cultures and languages that differ from region to region. I want to focus on two groups: the rich and the poor. Everyone might be different from different places but we all have in common the wealth gap. When you watch a video, pertaining to those who come from wealth, you see fancy cars and big houses. When you watch a video, pertaining to those who do not come from wealth, you see small houses and rarely any vehicles. Individuals walk or use old bikes to get around. No personal drivers. I want to make a point as it pertains to the difference in presentation to the world. On television Africa was depicted as this poor continent riddled with war and lack of food and water. You saw children starving and parents who were unable to make ends meet. No sign of wealth or development to grow the country. It's under-represented to the world. But what society has failed to realize is the strive Africa has m...

Analysis : Advocacy Journalism: "Harvest of Shame"

Image
Harvest of Shame brought to light the harsh conditions of farm labor workers. These individuals left their homelands in search of better. This documentational journalism wanted to open the eyes of the American public. To show them how the produce they buy in the store reaches them. Many people do not know or care how the material things they own reach stores. They just buy and continue with their lives. Not much or any appreciation for the people who have to pour their blood, sweat, and tears into making that shirt or harvesting that corn. The documentary showed people the true reality of commerce. The inhumane treatment by withholding pay, lack of clean food and water, disgusting living conditions etc. The journalist took a brave step going to these locations and putting their jobs on the line. If the higher up found out that there were news reporters sneaking around, that would cause problems for CBS. This is similar to Hunter S. Thompson who lived the life of a gang member for...

The Media and the Government - The Struggle for Control

Image
The media personales aim to acquire more means and viewers to their platforms. They seek to build on their stock and revenue to continue building their companies. The media is able to influence people based on algorithms. The government seeks to build on public image and promotion. Politicians have an image to upkeep in order to keep support for elections time. The people within these two institutions, aka the journalist, just want to report the truth. What motivates or is the common denominator is attention. They want the public’s attention. These institutions and individuals cannot function without the public. They have to find effective ways of gaining and keeping their attention. They share posts, messages, and readings that can be deemed important or not. Some examples are (1) In Norway, the media is seen operating in favor of the political environment (Reporters Without Borders 2024). The reason why it's viewed as favorable is because Norwegian politicians, parliamentarians...

Strategic Communication

Image
Strategic communication is a set of communication skills specifically designed for a professional setting to achieve a common goal. When hearing the term “strategic communication” you would automatically think of businessmen conducting business deals. They have to communicate in certain ways for any deal to go through. But strategic communication means effective ways to make sure that any message released dominates communication, has a context of credibility and best framing (Bennett 2016). Politics and politicians utilize this method of communication especially during election season. Both state and federal levels. Strategic communication begins with managing the message. Managing involves developing and communicating a message to promote a campaign’s political goal to the audience (Bennett 2016). There are four working functions to message developing and communicating: (1) message shaping, (2) message salience, (3) message credibility, and (4) message framing. We will be focusi...

Analysis : Manufacturing Consent

Image
Manufacturing content means appealing to the masses, which is usually one sided. Mr. Chomsky would agree. He argued that the elite are pulling the strings behind what is published and what is not published. I agree that media information is definitely changing at the hands of the elite. It's a type of controlling the narrative. If they can control what's being shared they are able to create support or interest in what is currently happening. This in turn manipulates individuals to change their way of thinking. People are influenced by what they see. People then base their values, ideals, and/or opinions on what the media is sharing. Chomsky wanted the public to open their eyes to see the underlying corruption within the media. In the videos he discussed the production and investments made into the media. These are two important sectors because once production agrees with the information being shared, more and more investment shares are allocated. Looking deeper in the foundat...

Analysis : Gonzo Journalism

Image
When you think of the word “Gonzo” what comes to mind? I think of a cartoon character running away after pranking someone. It sounds like a fun word but in retrospect it is serious business. What makes journalism exciting is the way some journalists break the fourth wall and the rules to traditional journalism. There are always those special few who break through the norm and Hunter S. Thompson is one of those few. He did things journalists during his time and now would not even think of doing. He lived the life of a gang member for one year just to write a book (Biography 2021). He almost died for the story but the reward from the story was certainly worth it. I would agree that his way of obtaining stories was more on the unconventional side but that is what journalism is. Inorder to understand the story you are reporting you have to live it. The audience and readers have to live it through the words. It was considered dishonest for some people because he was not doing it the t...
