Freedom on the Internet - Theory and Application

Image
I am 50/50 with the precedent established in the Reno Case. So let’s break down the statement. The first sentence goes, “The Internet is a unique and wholly new medium of worldwide human communication.” Before the internet, people were communicating by house phone, the large box phone with an antenna, handwritten letters, and mail pigeons, just to name a few. The internet provided a new wave of chat rooms and websites, people could connect with family and friends for and wide no matter the time of day. The second sentence goes, “now enables tens of millions of people to communicate with one another and to access vast amounts of information from around the world.” Apart from communicating with friends and family, people were able to access news and information from around the world. People who migrated to different countries, for example, people from the Bahamas, who moved to America, were able to get updates from news back home. They were able to keep up with current events back home. ...

Freedom of the Press - Definition, Measurement, and a Global Assessment

Image
Freedom of the press is the provision to share an opinion, idea, value, and/or perspective with others without restrictions. This is an important concept to consider because in order for society to grow, you need assistance by words. Press is a form of speech and anyone with a voice deserves the space to speak freely. Freedom house released a 2019 report on media freedom being a downward spiral. The study lasted for five years and expanded over sixteen countries (Freedom House 2019). They rated each country on a scale from zero to four. Zero being the worst and four being the best. The article touched on different subjects such as implications of democratic governance and media freedom globally and achieving media dominance. Implications of democracy focused on floating transparency and the need to increase transparency with the public (Freedom House 2019). Media dominance focused on squelching critical outlets and bolstering loyal outlets by using economic, legal, and extra lega...

Analysis : A Critical Analysis of the State of News Media

Image
The Pew Research Center released the state of the news media project that consists of eight fact sheets. These fact sheets tactile different forums of media. All have a common factor that contributes to either an increase or decrease in viewership, revenue, and coverage. One common factor is the decrease in first time reporting news. Newspaper (print and digital), television viewers and radio broadcasts have seen a decline in viewership. People are not tuning in as much to evening broadcasts or listening to traditional radio stations. But other forms of news media such as late night talk shows and third party news sources are gaining more viewerships because of how engaging they have become. Once bigtime news media are slowly declining possibly because of new media arising and public confidence. These new means of media have seen an increase in their viewers and revenue. Facebook saw a rise in revenue due to digital advertising. This also plays a role in traditional news broadcas...

Anaylsis : The Role and Impact of Facebook

Image
Before the graduation of instagram and the birth of snapchat, there was facebook. The eldest sibling to the social media trinity. Before instagram took its first high school exam and snapchat taking its first steps, facebook was the platform to be on. After its grandparent, myspace settled in for retirement, facebook took on the role of carrying social media into the 21st century. If you wanted to connect with people from your 1985 high school graduation senior class, you could find individuals on facebook. People posting family and old time pictures. No, people were not taking photos of everything they ate and posting it to their stories (that's insta during their teenage years.) People were most focused on connecting with family members, past friends, and the news. Now between now and then, news seems more reliable than it does today. You could say there was not much clickbait or fake news spread, and if there was, it was not in abundance or obvious to the viewer. In recent yea...

Analysis : Fake News - What is it and What Should Be Done?

Image
Fake News is the spreading of false and/or misinformation without facts by communication. Anyone can create fake news reports in order to gain views, reads, or whatever the case may be. This is a prevalent problem especially in today’s technology based world. There are so many news outlets that release content everyday about various topics and issues in order to keep the public up-to-date. With everyone becoming their own reporters it is getting harder to tell the truth from lies. Some self reporters collect evidence and/or facts to support their claims, while others do it for fun with no real substantial evidence and/or facts. News is spread by the use of social media platforms. People often follow their favorite celebrities. Anytime the celebrity posts something they agree with, individuals share and promote that topic. The weight of celebrities’ words holds a lot, that supporters are more willing to listen to what they have to say. In terms of partisanship, major news outlets ...

Media Personalities : Call For Action

Image
It seems late night talk shows were a thing before they became a thing in the 21st century. Before Stephen Colbert and Seth Myers you had Howard Beale, who broke the “fourth wall” and engaged his viewers to get angry and let out their frustrations. People have said that when you go into an empty space and release all tension by screaming out loud does help to calm the body. That’s what Howard essentially asked viewers to do. He became a television therapist by telling the American people to scream what makes them angry with America. Now there is a downside to media personalities encouraging this, meaning some might take it to extreme levels when it's just to express your frustration by yelling out your window. But this clip is relaying the actual feelings many express. Sometimes you do not realize how much you internalize from the news until you express it with others. This depiction can be related to today’s late night talk shows like Colbert and Myers. Only difference is that t...

Mass Media and the American Democracy

Image
Does the mass media effectively serve the needs of the American democratic system, or not? In terms of making sure the American people are up-to-date on current events, yes. The media is able to broadcast important news updates, debates, world wide events, etc. But does all of this assist the needs of American democracy? It is honestly fair game to the reader. 50% of individuals will argue that the media has destroyed the concept of democracy with biased actions. The other 50% would argue that the media has broadened the horizon of democracy with equal and fair actions. Bruce Bimber made a prediction in 2003, stating that the technical advancements were considered political because they can affect the social and economical structures and values (Dunaway and Graber 2023).  I believe the media serves the American democratic system by providing a space for all to speak. The first amendment consists of the concept of freedom of speech and press. All opinions and views are welco...
